چکیده

When larvae of the tenebrionid beetle, Zophobas rugipes, were allowed to disperse among 26 equivalent chambers in a circular dispersarium, distribution patterns were found to be a function of larval weight and number of larvae in the apparatus (N). Small larvae (x wt 250 mg) were significantly aggregated while large mature larvae (, 1000 mg) were highly overdispersed. Medium larvae were intermediate, being overdispersed when N was 26 and showing some aggregation within general overdispersion when N was 52. Larval distributions did not deviate significantly from randomness when N was 13, indicating weak interactions at low density. The increasing tendency to overdisperse with increasing larval weight correlates with the parallel increasing tendency to pupate. Since metamorphosis of Zophobas rugipes larvae is known to be inhibited by crowding, this weight-related overdispersal probably allows pupation by mature larvae by causing them to leave regions of high population density.

Inhibition of pupation due to crowding in some tenebrionid beetles.

Pupation of mature larvae of several species of tenebrionid beetles is inhibited by crowding. The magnitude of the inhibition varies according to species. The primary factor causing this inhibition is the mechanical stimulation resulting from inter-larval contacts. Cannibalism of prepupae, pupae and teneral adults is discussed as the probable chief factor responsible for the evolution of the in...

Zophobas a Tra Tus (fab.) and Z. R Ugipes Kirsch (coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) Are the Same Species

Morphometry of key characters and cross-breeding were used to test whether Zophobas atratus (Fab.) and Z. rugipes Kirsch might be a single species. Morphometry readily distinguished two distinct types, but substantial reproductive compatibility between them indicated that they are probably morphs of a single species. Between-population hybrids were intermediate in the measured characters. The f...

A Third Type of Defensive Behavior in the Tenebrionid Beetle Zophobas atratus Pupae

Pupae of the tenebrionid beetle Zophobas atratus Fabricius (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) exhibit two types of reflex abdominal motions in response to tactile stimulation: circular rotation and lateral bending to close pinching devices (gin-traps). In the present study, the pupa exhibited novel, sequential abdominal movements at 0.3-2.2 sec after the onset of mechanical stimulation. The most effec...

Defensive Gin-Trap Closure Response of Tenebrionid Beetle, Zophobas atratus, Pupae

Pupae of the beetle Zophobas atratus Fab. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) have jaws called gin traps on the lateral margin of their jointed abdominal segments. When a weak tactile stimulation was applied to the intersegmental region between the two jaws of a gin trap in a resting pupa, the pupa rapidly closed and reopened single or multiple gin traps adjacent to the stimulated trap for 100200 ms. I...
